What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A working definition
GEO is the work of getting your brand named and cited in AI answers. What it is, how it differs from SEO, and what actually moves the needle.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand recommended and cited inside answers from AI assistants: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. In SEO the unit of success is a ranking position. In GEO it is a mention in the answer, a place in the shortlist the assistant gives, or a link in its sources.
Why GEO exists now
Buyers increasingly ask an assistant for a shortlist instead of scanning ten blue links. If someone asks "what's the best invoicing tool for a two-person agency?", the assistant names three to five products and explains why. The products it names get considered. The rest are invisible for that conversation, however well they rank in Google.
That shortlist is not random. For product questions, most assistants run web searches before answering, read a handful of pages and summarize them. Your chance of being named depends on whether those pages mention you, whether the assistant can read your own site, and whether what it finds about you is clear and consistent.
How GEO differs from SEO
GEO and SEO share a foundation. A page that search engines cannot crawl, or that answers nothing, will not help you in either. Three differences matter in practice.
The first is where you need to appear. In SEO, your own page has to rank. In GEO, the pages the assistant reads have to include you, and many of those are third-party lists, reviews and forum threads. A brand that is absent from the "best X tools" articles an assistant cites will struggle to be recommended even if its own site is excellent.
The second is what gets used. Assistants quote passages, so a paragraph that states a fact plainly ("The free plan includes three exports a month with no watermark") is more useful to them than a page of marketing copy. A long page with the answer buried in the fifth section is harder to cite than a short one that answers in its first two sentences.
The third is how you measure. A ranking position is fairly stable from one search to the next. An AI answer is not: ask the same question twice and the shortlist can change. Measuring GEO means asking each question several times and tracking the rate at which you are named.
What GEO work looks like
Most GEO programs end up doing four kinds of work.
You make sure assistants can reach and read your site. That means allowing their crawlers in robots.txt, checking that your CDN or firewall does not block them, and serving your content in the HTML rather than rendering it with JavaScript in the browser. Many AI crawlers fetch the raw HTML and stop there.
You track the questions that matter. Pick the prompts your buyers actually ask, in their words, and record for each engine whether you are named, where you appear in the order, and which sources were cited.
You fill the gaps you find. When an assistant recommends a competitor for a question, look at the pages it cited and the searches it ran. Then publish a page on your own site that answers that question directly, with the facts the assistant needs, and work to get listed on the third-party pages it trusts.
You keep your facts straight. Assistants sometimes describe your pricing or features wrongly, usually because an old page or a third-party article says so. Finding those claims and correcting the sources is part of the job.
What does not work
Mass-producing thin pages or fake reviews to flood the web is sometimes sold as GEO. It tends to fail on its own terms, because assistants weigh sources they consider credible, and it carries real risk. In April 2026, China's Cyberspace Administration listed "malicious marketing using GEO" among the forms of AI data poisoning targeted by a national enforcement campaign. Accurate, useful pages and genuine third-party coverage are slower and they last.
FAQ
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Search engines still send most web traffic, and AI assistants rely on search indexes for many answers. Good SEO is a prerequisite for GEO, and GEO adds work on top of it: third-party presence, quotable answers and AI-specific measurement.
Which AI assistants should I optimize for?
Start with the ones your buyers use. For most B2B and consumer software that means ChatGPT first, then Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Track them separately, because each one searches and cites differently.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Answers that rely on live web search can change within days of a new page being crawled and indexed. Answers drawn from model training data change only when new model versions ship, which can take months.
How do I check whether AI crawlers can read my site?
Run a readiness check that tests robots.txt rules for each AI crawler, requests your pages with their user agents to catch firewall blocks, and confirms your content is present in the raw HTML. Promptvane's free AI readiness audit does this in about 30 seconds.
